Root Canals in Clanton, AL.
It Is Not What You've Been Told.

Root canals have the worst reputation in dentistry and it is almost entirely undeserved. For most patients the procedure feels a lot like getting a filling, and it is the treatment that saves a tooth we would otherwise have to pull.

At Price & Baker, we perform root canal therapy on front teeth and premolars right here in our Clanton office. If your pain is coming from a molar, we will tell you that at your exam and send you to a specialist we trust — with your records, a warm handoff, and no guesswork on your end.

Not sure which tooth is the problem? That is exactly what the exam is for.

The Words "Root Canal" Are Scarier Than the Appointment.

Somebody's uncle had a bad one in 1987 and told the story at every family gathering since. That's where most of the fear comes from, and it has outlived the dentistry by about forty years.

So people put it off. They live on ibuprofen. They chew on the other side. They wait for the pain to pass, and when it finally does, they think they got lucky.

That's the part worth knowing: when an infected tooth stops hurting, it usually means the nerve has died. The infection is still there. It's still spreading toward the bone. You just lost the only warning signal you had.

The Treatment That Saves the
Tooth Instead of Removing It.

A root canal treats infection inside the tooth. Dr. Price numbs the area, removes the infected tissue from the inner canals, cleans and disinfects them, and seals the tooth so bacteria can't get back in. The tooth stays in your mouth, roots and all, doing the job it was built for.

Here is the honest comparison. The alternative to a root canal is not "leave it alone." The alternative is extraction, and then living with a gap or paying for a bridge, an implant, or a partial denture to fill it. Keeping your own tooth is almost always the cheaper and better outcome.

Most patients tell us afterward that the appointment was far easier than they braced for. The pain they walked in with was the hard part. The treatment is what ended it.

Routine Exams & Professional Cleanings

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

The tells are fairly consistent: lingering pain after something hot or cold, a deep ache that throbs at night, sharp pain when you bite down, tenderness or swelling in the gum near one tooth, a pimple-like bump on the gum, or a tooth that has darkened compared to its neighbors.

Not every one of those means a root canal. Some point to a cracked tooth, a deep cavity, or gum problems instead. An exam and an X-ray tell us which it is, and that appointment is short.

Who it's right for: Anyone with lingering tooth pain, temperature sensitivity that doesn't fade, gum swelling near one tooth, or a tooth that has changed color.

Root Canal Therapy, Step by Step

Dr. Price numbs the tooth completely before anything begins. You should feel pressure and movement, not pain. If you feel anything sharp, you say so and we stop and add more anesthetic. That rule is absolute.

She then opens the tooth, removes the infected pulp, shapes and disinfects the canals, and fills them with a sealing material. Most patients drive themselves home afterward and go back to normal the next day, with some tenderness for a few days that over-the-counter pain relievers handle.

Who it's right for: Patients with an infected or inflamed nerve inside a front tooth or premolar that still has enough healthy structure to save. If the problem tooth turns out to be a molar, we will let you know at your exam and refer you to a specialist.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

The Crown That Comes After

A tooth that has had a root canal is more brittle than it used to be. Most of them need a crown afterward to keep them from cracking.

We'll tell you up front whether your tooth will need one and what it costs, so the crown is part of the plan and the budget from day one rather than a surprise at the second appointment.

Who it's right for: Most patients who have completed root canal therapy, particularly on back teeth.

Comfort for Anxious Patients

If the phrase "root canal" makes your stomach drop, tell us when you book. Nitrous oxide is available to take the edge off, along with neck pillows and music. Dr. Price will narrate what she's doing if that helps you, or stay quiet if that helps more.

Dental anxiety is not something to be embarrassed about, and it is not something we're going to try to talk you out of. We just plan around it.

Who it's right for: Anyone who has been avoiding this appointment because of fear, a bad past experience, or a sensitive gag reflex.

Crowns & Bridges

When a Tooth Can't Be Saved

Sometimes the damage is too far along. The tooth is cracked below the gum line, or there isn't enough structure left to restore. When that's the case, Dr. Price will tell you plainly instead of putting you through a procedure that won't hold.

Then we talk about extraction and what comes next: a bridge, a partial, or a denture, depending on what fits your mouth and your budget.

Who it's right for: Patients whose tooth is too damaged or infected for endodontic treatment to succeed.

From Pain to Fixed.
3 Simple Steps.

Come In for an Exam and X-Ray

Call (205) 755-1231 or request an appointment online. A short exam and X-ray tell us whether the nerve is involved, which tooth is causing the problem, and what the right next step looks like, whether that's treatment here or a referral to a specialist.

Get the Plan and the Price

Dr. Price will explain what she found, whether a root canal is the right treatment, whether you'll need a crown afterward, and what the whole thing costs. Then you decide.

Get the Treatment and Get Your Life Back

Fully numbed, at your pace. Most patients are back to normal the next day with the pain that brought them in finally gone.

Every Week You Wait Narrows Your Options

An infection inside a tooth does not stay inside the tooth. It works down the canals,
out the tip of the root, and into the bone around it. That's what an abscess is.

The window where a root canal will work has an end. Past it, the only remaining option is pulling
the tooth, and then you're paying for a bridge, an implant, or a partial to replace what you already had.
That path costs more money, more appointments, and more months than the
treatment you were avoiding.

A tooth you can still save is worth the phone call today.

Your Root Canal Questions, Answered.

Does a root canal hurt?

The tooth is fully numbed before Dr. Price begins, so what you feel is pressure and movement rather than pain. Most patients say it felt similar to having a filling done. The severe pain people associate with root canals is almost always the infection they walked in with, not the treatment that ended it. If you feel anything sharp at any point, you tell us and we stop and add more anesthetic.

Do you perform root canals on all teeth?

Dr. Price performs root canal therapy on front teeth and premolars. Molar root canals involve more canals and greater complexity and are best handled by an endodontist. If your exam shows that a molar is the problem, we will refer you to a trusted specialist nearby and make sure your records go with you so you're not starting from scratch.

How much does a root canal cost in Clanton, AL?

It depends on which tooth is involved. Most dental insurance plans cover a meaningful share of root canal treatment. Dr. Price will give you the full cost, including the crown if you'll need one, before any treatment is scheduled. Call (205) 755-1231 and our team will also verify your benefits ahead of time.

How long does a root canal take?

Usually one appointment of about an hour to ninety minutes, sometimes two visits depending on the tooth and how much infection is present. If a crown is needed afterward, that's a separate appointment.

Should I just have the tooth pulled instead? It's cheaper.

It's cheaper that day, and more expensive after that. Once a tooth is gone, the teeth around it start to shift, and you'll want to fill the gap with a bridge, an implant, or a partial denture. Add those up and keeping your own tooth is nearly always the better value, and it functions better than anything we can replace it with. That said, if the tooth truly can't be saved, we'll tell you.

How long will the tooth last after a root canal?

A properly treated and crowned tooth can last the rest of your life. What matters most afterward is getting the crown placed when it's recommended and keeping up with regular cleanings and exams.

The pain went away on its own. Do I still need treatment?

Very likely yes, and this is the most important question on this page. When an infected tooth stops hurting, it's usually because the nerve has died. The infection remains and continues to spread, only now without the warning signal. Come in and let us take an X-ray.

What happens if I do nothing?

The infection spreads out of the root tip and into the surrounding bone, forming an abscess. That typically brings swelling, more severe pain, and eventually the loss of the tooth, plus the risk of the infection spreading further. Doing nothing is the one option that has no good version of the ending.

Amazing experience from start to finish! I broke my crown, and Kathy was able to work me into the schedule the very next day. Dr. Price and the entire staff were absolutely wonderful and made me feel so comfortable throughout the whole process. I have pretty severe dental anxiety, and they went above and beyond to make the experience as calm and stress-free as possible. Everyone was kind, patient, and genuinely caring. I’m so thankful I found such an amazing dental office and would highly recommend Dr. Price and her team to anyone, especially if you have dental anxiety!
